Jassim Albastaki embodies the entrepreneurial spirit that has come to define the United Arab Emirates’ rapid economic transformation. With over 25 years of experience spanning hospitality, aviation, real estate, and food & beverage industries, Albastaki has established himself as one of the UAE’s most influential business leaders and a passionate advocate for nurturing the next generation of Emirati entrepreneurs.
Albastaki’s journey began with a solid educational foundation that would shape his multifaceted career. He became the first Emirati citizen to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree from the Management Faculty of International Hotel and Hospitality Industry at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. This achievement was particularly significant as it represented the UAE’s growing engagement with international education and its commitment to developing world-class business talent.
He later complemented his hospitality education with an MBA in Finance and Business Management, equipping himself with the comprehensive business acumen that would prove invaluable across his diverse ventures. This combination of hospitality expertise and financial knowledge would become a hallmark of his approach to business – understanding both the service aspects and the financial mechanics of successful enterprises.
Before launching his entrepreneurial ventures, Albastaki gained valuable experience in the public sector, serving in executive management positions at several prestigious government institutions. His role as Executive Director in the Business Unit at Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) was particularly influential, placing him at the heart of Dubai’s technology and innovation ecosystem during a critical period of development.
At Dubai Silicon Oasis, Albastaki contributed to building what would become one of the region’s most important technology hubs – a 7.2 square kilometer integrated free zone that today houses thousands of companies and serves as a catalyst for technological innovation in the UAE. His experience at DSOA provided him with deep insights into the intersection of government policy, technology development, and business growth.
He also served as Executive Director of Real Estate at the Dubai World Trade Centre, where he gained expertise in property management and development – skills that would later prove valuable in his role at Yas Asset Management. These government positions not only broadened his professional expertise but also gave him a comprehensive understanding of the UAE’s economic development strategies and the role of public-private partnerships in driving growth.
One of Albastaki’s most ambitious ventures was his role as Managing Director and General Manager of MIDEX Airlines, where he was also one of the founding members. Established in 2007, MIDEX Airlines became the fourth airline company registered in the UAE and grew to become the largest private airline company in the field of air cargo transport in the Middle East.
The timing of MIDEX’s launch proved challenging, as the global financial crisis hit just months after the airline began operations in spring 2008. As Albastaki recalls, the downturn created severe headwinds for the freight business, with passenger airlines undercutting cargo specialists by as much as 50% as they sought to fill empty capacity with freight at rock-bottom prices.
Despite these challenges, Albastaki demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic thinking. Under his leadership, MIDEX pivoted from scheduled cargo services to ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance) charters, adapting to market conditions while maintaining the company’s reputation for on-time delivery. The airline operated a fleet that eventually grew to include seven Airbus A300B4-203F freighters and three Boeing 747-228F aircraft, serving destinations from Afghanistan to Europe.
Though relatively new to aviation when he joined MIDEX, Albastaki’s background in hospitality and business management proved valuable. His 15-year relationship with MIDEX International president Dr. Issam Khairallah led to his appointment when Khairallah suggested, “Why look for someone when you’re the right person?” This vote of confidence launched Albastaki into one of the most challenging sectors of international business.
Perhaps no venture better illustrates Albastaki’s innovative spirit and persistence than Cafe2go, his unique coffee chain concept that introduced camel milk beverages to the modern café experience. The story of Cafe2go began in 2009 when Albastaki sought to acquire a master franchise for an international food and beverage chain. After being rejected or priced out by four different companies, he made a pivotal decision: “I will create a unique concept. I will create a brand for the UAE and go global.”
His analysis of the coffee market revealed an opportunity to differentiate through local heritage. While Asian markets were using soy and rice milk alternatives, Albastaki decided to leverage Middle Eastern tradition by introducing camel milk – a product that was common two generations ago but had largely disappeared from modern consumption.
The development process was complex. Camel milk’s natural saltiness and different density from cow’s milk required extensive experimentation. Albastaki developed a secret blend at his coffee factory in Spain, perfecting the temperature and steaming techniques to create beverages that matched the quality of traditional coffee drinks. The result was innovative products like the “camelccino” and “camel juice” – blends of camel milk with various fruit juices.
Beyond beverages, Albastaki expanded into camel meat products, developing techniques to tenderize the meat for use in fajitas, mortadella, hot dogs, and burgers. His focus on the health benefits of these products – camel milk has 10 times more iron and three times more vitamin C than cow’s milk, while camel meat is one of the healthiest red meats with low cholesterol – positioned Cafe2go at the intersection of tradition and modern health consciousness.
The bureaucratic challenges were equally daunting. Albastaki spent 11 months battling with Dubai Municipality, the Roads and Transport Authority, and the Department of Economic Development to approve his mobile coffee shop concept – something that had never been done before in Dubai. His persistence paid off, and his advice to other entrepreneurs reflects this experience: “Never think negatively. Always stay positive. You should guide each government official; he should not guide you.”
The success of Cafe2go transformed Albastaki from someone rejected as a franchisee into a franchisor himself, with locations including the Murooj Rotana hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Dubai Airport Freezone, offering various formats from kiosks and pushcarts to full outlets and drive-throughs.
In 2016, Albastaki founded Franchise Souq, a comprehensive platform that has become the UAE’s leading portal for franchise opportunities. As Founder and CEO, he created this venture to address an unmet need in the market for a 360-degree franchise solution that connects aspiring entrepreneurs with established franchise brands.
Franchise Souq serves as more than just a marketplace – it provides franchise consulting, market research, training programs, and comprehensive support for franchise development. The platform has been instrumental in helping countless SMEs scale up while attracting international franchise brands to the Middle East market. Through Franchise Souq, Albastaki has democratized access to franchise opportunities, making it easier for entrepreneurs to find the right business model that suits their capabilities and investment capacity.
The company positions itself as a complete ecosystem for franchising, offering services to both franchisors looking to expand their brands and franchisees seeking proven business models. This venture represents Albastaki’s evolution from being rejected as a franchisee himself (which led to creating Cafe2go) to becoming a facilitator of franchise opportunities for others – a full-circle journey that exemplifies his commitment to entrepreneurial empowerment.
Beyond his own ventures, Albastaki has been instrumental in fostering entrepreneurship across the UAE. He founded Envelope Investment Company with a vision to support the small enterprise sector through participation in small businesses and working on their development and growth. The company’s mission focuses on creating a pioneering economic model in the SME sector and playing a leading role in supporting micro-entrepreneurs.
His commitment to entrepreneurship extends to numerous leadership positions in key organizations. He serves as a Board Member of the Emirati Entrepreneurs Association and the Advisory Council of the Federation of Gulf Entrepreneurship. He is also a member of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for SME Development, the Khalifa bin Zayed Fund for small and medium projects, and participated in the Group of Twenty Entrepreneurship (G20).
Albastaki also established Moon Company for Consulting and Hotel Management, leveraging his extensive hospitality background to create a center for integrated solutions in hotel and hospitality management strategies and services. This venture represents a full-circle return to his roots in hospitality, now enhanced with decades of diverse business experience.
Currently serving as General Manager of Yas Asset Management, Albastaki brings his extensive expertise to one of Abu Dhabi’s premier destination management companies. Yas Asset Management operates vibrant leisure and entertainment destinations on Yas Island, managing over 165 units with a Total Gross Leasable Area exceeding 90,124 square meters.
In this role, Albastaki works with strategic real estate partners and global brands, leveraging his 25+ years of experience in hospitality, tourism, and property management. His leadership was recently highlighted when Yas Asset Management partnered with The Luxury Media Group for exclusive media sales and partnership rights for the Yas Marina Race Weekend 2025, demonstrating his continued ability to forge strategic partnerships that enhance destination visibility.
Albastaki has become a prominent voice in UAE business circles, regularly participating in conferences, television programs, and educational initiatives. His contributions to motivating young Emiratis to enter entrepreneurship have been particularly notable, whether through lectures, conferences, or media appearances where he shares practical advice and insights from his diverse business experiences.
As a researcher and lecturer in entrepreneurship and economics, Albastaki actively shares his knowledge through various platforms. His Twitter presence (@Jabastaki) reflects his engagement with economic trends and retail sector analysis, demonstrating his continued interest in understanding and interpreting market dynamics.
He has been honored to participate in prestigious programs such as the “Dubai Economic Leaders” program from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Center for Leadership Development, recognition that underscores his status as a thought leader in the UAE’s business community.
Throughout his career, Albastaki has demonstrated several key principles that define his approach to business:

Cultural Innovation: His success with Cafe2go demonstrates how traditional elements can be reimagined for modern markets, creating unique value propositions that resonate both locally and globally.
