NEC and emaratech deploy contactless facial recognition to enhance speed, security, and efficiency in airline crew immigration processes
Dubai has taken another decisive step toward the future of aviation operations with the introduction of biometric smart gates for flydubai crew at its Airport Operations Centre. Through a strategic partnership between NEC and emaratech, six advanced biometric gates have been deployed in the crew immigration area, enabling fully automated, contactless identity verification designed for high-speed, high-security environments.
At the heart of the solution is NEC’s NeoFace Express X5 facial recognition technology, delivered through facepods that authenticate crew identities almost instantly. The system replaces traditional manual document checks with a paperless, digital-first process, significantly reducing clearance times while maintaining stringent standards of data security and privacy.
Integrated seamlessly with flydubai’s digital infrastructure and UAE immigration platforms, the smart gates are purpose-built to support smooth crew movement in one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs. The deployment is expected to streamline operational workflows, reduce congestion, and enhance overall efficiency in a high-traffic setting where precision and speed are critical.
NEC’s facial recognition technology is widely recognised for its accuracy and reliability. The company has consistently ranked among the top performers in evaluations conducted by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) since 2009. In recent assessments, NEC achieved leading scores for identification accuracy, including tests using images taken more than a decade apart—mirroring real-world passport renewal cycles and underscoring the robustness of its biometric capabilities.
Commenting on the milestone, Mohamed Shawky, Director of Regional Sales and Strategic Accounts at NEC, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to advancing aviation innovation across the GCC. “As airlines and airports in the region continue to grow, NEC is delivering biometric and digital identity solutions that combine security with efficiency. Together with emaratech, we are shaping a smarter, safer, and more seamless travel experience,” he said.
Bill Carleton, Director at NEC Corporation of America, added that the deployment builds on NEC’s extensive global airport experience. “NEC is already creating safe and seamless experiences at airports worldwide, with thousands of biometric touchpoints in daily use. This integration with emaratech, supporting flydubai’s crew operations, reinforces our role in modernising mission-critical aviation processes,” he noted.
From a national perspective, the initiative also strengthens the UAE’s broader digital identity ecosystem. HE Thani Alzaffin, Group Chief Executive Officer of emaratech, described the collaboration as a pivotal step forward. “By integrating NEC’s top-ranked facial recognition technology into emaratech’s trusted platforms, we are redefining how biometric solutions can streamline and secure critical border control processes,” he said. “This partnership reinforces our commitment to delivering scalable, AI-powered solutions that elevate operational excellence and user trust—today and into the future.”
Globally, NEC has deployed advanced biometric solutions at more than 80 airports across 50 countries and regions, reflecting a growing shift toward AI-driven technologies in aviation. As airlines and airports increasingly prioritise efficiency, security, and user experience, the flydubai smart gate deployment positions Dubai at the forefront of next-generation, contactless aviation operations.
